Campus polling stations aim to make amends

By any account, the 2006 federal election was a fiasco for St. George residence students. Polling stations were planned, then cancelled, then reinstated at the last minute. Elections Canada never clarified what on-campus students, who may not have a bank statement, utility bill or lease to prove their address, could use to vote. Students were turned away from advance polls because they did not have documents that no one had told them they would need.

Not this time around, according to Dave Scrivener, VP External at UTSU.

‘Reporter,’ really Liberal helper, tapes SAC office

The tight race in Trinity-Spadina took a bizarre turn last week when a volunteer with Liberal Tony Ianno’s campaign was found posing as a CBC reporter at the Students’ Administrative Council (SAC) office.

David Chu, whom The Varsity tracked down at Ianno’s campaign office on Sunday, refused to comment on the case until after election day.

Candidate profile: Bill Graham

“I’m proud of the fact that we’ve put our country’s financial house in order,” said Bill Graham last Thursday at a Toronto-Centre candidates’ debate in Alumni Hall. “Our country witnesses real prosperity, [and] the only balanced budget in the western world.”

Graham is the Liberal candidate running for re-election in Toronto-Centre, which includes the east half of campus.

Campus will vote on election day

Elections Canada works to set up on-campus polls, but urgent questions remain about why voting stations were cancelled in the first place-especially when University of Ottawa students used them just last week

U of T students are breathing a guarded sigh of relief after an announcement that election polls will be open on the St. George campus after all. But many questions remain unanswered.

Confirmed by numerous sources, but not by Elections Canada, the polling stations at the University College dining hall, the Graduate Students’ Union, and 89 Chestnut will serve residence students voting in Trinity-Spadina in Monday’s federal election.

In theory, if you are a Canadian citizen, have turned 18 by January 23, and you have received a voter information card in the mail in the district you want to vote in, you’re all set to show up on election day and cast your vote.

For most students, however, it’s not that simple.
